On October 13, 1917, in Fatima, Portugal, tens of thousands of people gathered because the three visionary children of Fatima had told them that Mary had promised a miracle that day. There was a heavy rain and the fields were sloppy with mud. Journalists were there, as well as police and government officials.
Suddenly they all saw the sun dance. It swirled about in the sky, and drew closer to the earth. The muddy ground was dried up, as were the people's soaked clothing. The effect was seen fifty miles away. Communists and skeptics in the crowd were converted.
This photograph was taken while the people were experiencing the miracle. We have spent six months, on and off, tinkering with our restoration. When restoring a photo, we usually aim for a modern, sharp-looking photograph. On this one though, we found that wasn't working. Within the vagueness of old photographs, there is a certain leeway. You can go one way or another, and it is within the parameters of the vagueness. We got to a certain point in this photo when, as we sharpened the features, we began to lose some of the subtlest part of the expression on the people's faces. Even a few pixels more or less began to detract from their expressions. So we have taken the restoration this far and no farther because we think that this is the point where you can best see the miracle reflected in their countenances.
The witnesses are filled with awe. They are just at that moment taking in what must have been for most of them the most important event of their lives. Many would think about it for as long as they lived. Who is this God, who can stir the stars? What kind of world do we live in? The physical world must in some ways be made of subjective phenomena if only people within fifty miles saw the sun move. How can we understand something like that?
Like all of our restored photographs, we hope this one helps you and those you love draw closer to our loving Lord Jesus, the King of all Creation.
!!!!! IMPORTANT!!!! IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a white border around the image. About 1/2" on 5x7, 1.3" on 8.5x11, 1.6" on 11x14 and larger. It gives the print a finished look when framed without a matt.
